Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester which has a wide variety of industrial and biomedical applications. PCL is typically formed by the ring-opening polymerization of ε-Caprolactone using a metal catalyst (typically stannous octoate) and high heat. While PCL has been used extensively in fabrication and rapid prototyping, renewed interest in PCL for drug delivery has yielded an increased interest in PCL process manufacturing. PCL is currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for uses in several medical applications, and is currently the focus of multiple biomedical investigations ranging from drug-delivery to implantable devices.

Since the reemergence of PCL as a biomedical medium, there has been an increased interest in PCL copolymers, particularly amphiphilic polyethylene glycol (PEG)-PCL block copolymers. Combinations of AB and ABA triblock copolymers consisting of PCL and PEG have all been prepared with each composition offering highly unique characteristics.
